A batch of songs brewed up in the quantum musical soup of my homeland, Aotearoa. Finally realised to my satisfaction after a long voyage...
These songs were originally released as part of an EP titled 'When Night Returns', but I was never fully happy with how they turned out. I felt that, in spite of the wonderful job Michael O'Connell did mixing what we originally laid down, they were done in a hurry and deserved some more care and attention.
I started tinkering with them a few months back, adding some extra layers, some bass guitar, and re-doing all the vocals. I was really pleased with the results and decided to re-release them.
About the songs:
Prelude is simply a dreamy lead in to Leon's Favourite Tune, which is an ode to the fact that, even though we are here experiencing the present (hopefully), there is an older version of ourselves enjoying good times and great loves that happened in the past...
Central Park (After Dark) is about a shortcut through the park one night that I should never have taken, and the reprise is the crazy dreams that followed. It's actually in Wellington, but it could just as easily have been New York (just like I pictured it, skyscrapers and everything).
Wharekho is a secluded beach where I wrote the bare bones of the final track, Seabed (Forshore), a song that deals with the fighting over land between the Maori and Pakeha (Europeans) in New Zealand. A conflict I hope will one day be resolved, as unity is the one thing that will save us from the oppressive corporatised future we are currently facing.
Blessed be, AJC
